The new international president of the Unification Church, a Harvard-trained theologian and son of founder Sun Myung Moon, wants to reach out to other religions and would prefer mass weddings of hundreds, not thousands of couples. Hyung Jin Moon, 29, who in April became international president of a church that has a global following but also a sullied image, grew up in New York, once wore the robes of a Buddhist monk, studied at a Jesuit college and likes American football. "I love the other world religions. That is what I have focused on in my studies," Moon said in a recent interview. Moon said he wanted to take the church, officially called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, beyond its Protestant, evangelical base, increase democratic elections for leaders and strengthen its presence in South Korea. Sun Myung Moon, traveled to Brasilia for the ceremony at which José Moura exchanged vows with Sebastiana Moura. The couple had already been married in a secular ceremony, and the bride is pregnant. The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity is the official name for the Unification Church, whose members are sometimes referred to as "Moonies." The group was founded in South Korea in 1954 by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, whose parents became Presbyterians when Moon was 10. In 1992, Moon announced that he was the Messiah. Followers believe that Moon and his wife, Hak Ja Han Moon, are the "True Parents" of mankind who will establish God's kingdom on Earth - a state in which all people, races and religions will be united with one another and with God. Like many parents, Debbie Diglio was nervous when her only son, John Stacey, went off to college. But John was a stable, high-achieving, all-American young man who seemed the sort who might succeed in staying out of trouble. So when John left their home in central New Jersey and registered at New York University in 1992, Debbie Diglio, a nurse by profession, hoped for the best. But, then, shortly into his first semester, she said, "he went away one weekend and vanished." FULL ARTICLE LINK |
