Monday, 11 August 2008

An international human rights watchdog has raised concerns that practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual movement in China may be framed on false charges during the Beijing Olympics.

The New York-based  Falun Dafa Information Centre issued a statement on August 8, saying that the recent escalation of attacks on Falun Gong, inside and outside of China, was similar to previous violence that preceded vilification.

The Centre is concerned that there is a real possibility the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) may attempt to stage an incident, and then label the perpetrators as Falun Gong practitioners.   FULL ARTICLE LINK

Members of a peaceful Chinese spiritual movement say that more than 1,500 of its supporters have been detained in the run-up to the Olympic Games and that one of them, a popular folk singer, has died in custody.

The arrests have been carried out against Falun Gong, a group that practises traditional meditation and exercise. The Chinese government banned Falun Gong in 1999, calling it “an evil cult”.

The official media have not reported the arrests, but there has been lively discussion among music fans on Chinese websites over the fate of the singer Yu Zhou, 42. “F*** authority. Another beautiful soul has left the world,” commented one distraught fan.   FULL ARTICLE LINK

Friday, 04 January 2008

Falun Gong members and a Chinese political dissident said Wednesday they plan to sue Police Chief Bernard Melekian, Mayor Bill Bogaard and City Hall, claiming violation of their civil rights.

Denied a permit to hold a sizable march before Tuesday's Rose Parade, activists critical of China and a Beijing Olympics float said they'll file suit later this month and prove in court the denial was a politically motivated move to suppress their First Amendment rights.

"We came to protest Beijing's severe abuses and extreme human-rights violations, and now we have to defend our own rights first from our own government," said Shizhong Chen, a Falun Gong practitioner and president of the San Diego-based Conscience Foundation.   FULL ARTICLE LINK

Tuesday, 12 June 2007

The Singapore Subordinate Court began a case against five Falun Gong practitioners for an alleged "Assembly Without Permit" that took place on Oct. 22, 2005 at the Orchard Road Underpass. The hearing started officially on June 4, 2007.

The defense asked to have all charges dropped on the basis of insufficient evidence, but the prosecution refused. After the prosecution presented its case, the weakness of the evidence was apparent. The judge, despite the paucity of evidence, ruled that the charges were sufficiently supported.

The defendants expressed great disappointment, and chose not to take the stand to testify. The trial thus came to a premature end on June 5. The judge postponed announcing a verdict until the afternoon of June 7.   FULL ARTICLE LINK
