Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury; Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, and Sir Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi, have come together for the first time to urge peers to reject proposals that would allow families to help loved ones to die abroad free from the threat of prosecution. In a joint letter to The Daily Telegraph, they wrote that this legal change "would surely put vulnerable people at serious risk, especially sick people who are anxious about the burden their illness may be placing on others". Voters in Berlin are preparing to go to the polls to decide whether children should have a choice between classes in secular ethics or religion. Sunday's referendum has been organised by Berliners from the city's religious communities, including Muslims. Ethics classes have been compulsory in Berlin schools since 2006. But in most of the rest of Germany pupils have a choice between religion and ethics. SOURCE ARTICLE |

Dr Rowan Williams warned Mark Thompson at a meeting at Lambeth Palace that the broadcaster must not ignore its Christian audience. His intervention comes amid mounting concern among senior members of the Church of England that the BBC is downgrading its religious output and giving preferential treatment to minority faiths. The corporation recently sacked its head of religious programmes, Michael Wakelin, a Methodist preacher. SOURCE ARTICLE |

Controversial right-wing Dutch politician Geert Wilders has been banned from entering the UK on the grounds that he could be a threat to public order. Labour peer Lord Ahmed has said his presence would pose a risk because his views about the Koran - he has called it a "fascist book" - generate so much anger among Muslims. Mr Wilders is the latest name on a list of 270 people who have been prevented from entering the UK since July 2005. The reason? Their presence was "not conducive to the public good". SOURCE ARTICLE |

Dr John Sentamu said it was an “affront to the sensibility” of Christians everywhere that Jennie Cain is being investigated for alleged professional misconduct after she sent a private email to 10 friends asking for prayer. He said her case, and that of Caroline Petrie, the nurse suspended for offering to pray for an elderly patient, represented a “seeming intolerance and illiberality about faith in God which is being reflected in the higher echelons of our public services”. Hindus have welcomed the groundbreaking three-day dialogue between Christianity and Islam, starting today at Vatican City, whose theme is “"Love of God, Love of Neighbor”. Those of us who have wondered why there is such a ridiculous excess of religion on the BBC now have the answer. It is because Mark Thompson, an enthusiastic Catholic, wants it. Mr Thompson is a great proselytiser for his faith in the mould of Lord Reith, who thought the BBC was “the nation’s church”. And, of course, the BBC gives him a very big pulpit to preach from – one that reaches into just about every home in the country and which we all have to pay for. FULL ARTICLE LINK |

Religion has returned to the public sphere in proudly secularist France and Islam, religious ignorance and the late Pope John Paul all had something to do with it. And, although he is twice-divorced and only goes to church occasionally, President Nicolas Sarkozy is also doing his part to keep it there. The separation of church and state is deep in the political DNA in this traditionally Catholic country. Regular Sunday Mass attendance is down in the single figures. Priests almost never wear a Roman collar outside of their churches. FULL ARTICLE LINK |

Tens of thousands of pilgrims from Lithuania and beyond have descended on this tiny town to celebrate the "apparition" of the Virgin Mary 400 years ago, predating even the better-known miracles at Lourdes and Fatima. Historically, Siluva in central Lithuania has been a focal point not only for Roman Catholics but also for Lithuanian national and cultural identity during decades of brutal Russian and Soviet domination. The British Humanist Association (BHA) has welcomed the moves towards greater equality set out in the government’s Equality Bill White Paper - and has called for more action against discrimination by religious groups. It urges caution against the potential of the measures unveiled yesterday by Harriet Harman to create unintended consequences, in particular in increased disadvantage for individuals while "groups" are being favoured. In the backlash that followed the London bombings, there has been a steep rise in incidents of hate crime against Hindus and Sikhs, with most of them perpetrated because of mistaken identity, the Hindu Forum of Britain said in London. There were as many as 932 instances of such hate crimes against Indians, who are predominantly Hindus or Sikhs, as opposed to approximately 600 instances of faith-related hate crime against Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslims, Ramesh Kallidai, Secretary General of the Forum said on Wednesday evening.
