President George Bush attended a Christian service in Beijing yesterday to call for greater religious freedom in China but, in an indication of how religious persecution persists in the fiercely secular country, a leading local underground church activist was detained en route to the same ceremony.

Police in the Olympic football co-host city of Shenyang, northeast China, have been boning up on religions in a bid to understand foreigners and avoid insulting their feelings during the Games.

Tibetan exiles marched in protest against Chinese rule over their homeland in Nepal's capital Saturday before police stopped them and detained hundreds of demonstrators, authorities said.

The protesters marched about three miles into the heart of Katmandu before police in riot gear blocked them. Police used bamboo batons to beat some of them and detained at least 450, said police official R.P. Dhamala at the scene.   FULL ARTICLE LINK

Two telegraphs sent by the 14th Dalai Lama to Chinese leader Mao Zedong in 1956 and 1957 defied proclamations that "Tibet is lacking in freedom of religious belief", an official with the State Archives Administration (SAA) said here on Sunday.

China has launched a campaign in Tibet to denounce the Dalai Lama and to strengthen ties between the public and the Communist party, the Tibet Daily reported Monday.

Dozens of people have died in mass protests against Chinese rule in Tibet. Protestors on the streets of Lhasa set fire to Chinese businesses and smashed government buildings. The demonstrations began whenBuddhist monks marched from their monasteries on 10 March, to mark the 49th anniversary of a failed uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet which in 1959 tried to restore the Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, as the political leader of Tibet.

Most of the Tibetan living Buddhas and lamas are against secessionism and have opposed and checked the riots in various forms, said a top living Buddha in the northwestern Gansu Province.

The Dalai Lama condemned a "rule of terror" in his native Tibet on Sunday as Chinese forces blanketed the region's capital in security and pro-independence protests spread elsewhere in China.

A fresh protest in southwest China's Sichuan province reportedly left at least seven people dead in a dangerous escalation of the uprising by Tibetans against China's rule of the vast Himalayan region.

Access to YouTube in China was denied on Sunday after footage of recent deadly protests in Tibet appeared on the video posting site.

Attempts to call up the site met with a blank screen and an error message saying the web page could not be displayed.
